Pace Bowler Craig Overton included in England ODI Squad for New Zealand series

England were poor in the recently concluded Trans-Tasman T20 series featuring Australia and New Zealand. Eoin Morgan’s side failed to qualify for the finals of the competition despite earning a consolation win against New Zealand in the last round-robin game of the competition.

The side has suffered a setback as premier pacer Liam Plunkett has been sidelined from the upcoming five-match one-day series against New Zealand. The 32-year old has been regular in the side since 2015 World Cup and has picked up 61 wickets in 36 games at a splendid economy rate of 5.80. Plunkett has superb with the new-ball and became a death-overs specialist for England alongside Mark Wood.

Craig Overton has been named as a replacement for injured Liam Plunkett. The pace bowler has already made his debut in Test cricket in the Ashes series played in Australia. He played two back-to-back games before suffering from a rib injury that ruled out of the remainder of the series. He was selected for the home T20 series against South Africa in May 2017.

The 23-year old has been included in the one-day squad for the upcoming five-match series against New Zealand. Overton is a capable batsman lower down the order like Plunkett and picked up 16 wickets in domestic limited-overs competition for Somerset. He will face a big task to fill the gap left by Plunkett who has been the first-choice pacer for England besides Chris Woakes and Mark Wood.

England will be focused to do well in New Zealand after producing a comprehensive win over Australia in the five-match one-day series. Eoin Morgan’ side beat Australia by a 4-1 margin in January. New Zealand will start as favorites for the series after completing a whitewash over West Indies and Pakistan in the limited-overs format.

The return of Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali will see England field a full-strength side in the upcoming five-match series against New Zealand.
