Sri Lanka name 16-man squad for Bangladesh tri-nation series

Sri Lanka have announced their 16-man squad for the upcoming tri-nation series featuring Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Uncapped pacer Shehan Madushanka has earned his maiden call-up to the national side. He has played three first-class games so far but has been picked due to his express pace.

Head Coach Chandika Hathurusingha said that the pace bowler has been picked and will part of the setup till 2019 Cricket World Cup. Hathurusingha said that the Madushanka has got express pace and will definitely play games for Sri Lanka in the future. He has been dubbed as one of the bowlers who could end Sri Lanka’s recent woes in the bowling department. They have lacked potency and consistency to take wickets since the departure of Lasith Malinga.

Dinesh Chandimal, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Kusal Mendis also are included in the one-day squad for the tri-series that will be played in Bangladesh. Chandimal has been in poor form in the 50-over format but Hathurusingha believed that Sri Lanka needs experience in the batting lineup to get back to winning ways.

Sri Lanka seems to have no options at the moment as Kusal Mendis has come into the side despite his string of low performances at the domestic level. Angelo Matthews has been reappointed as ODI captain after resigning from the job six months due to hamstring problems that have plagued his cricketing career in recent times.

Thisara Perera was captain of the side for the tour of India but the side failed to get a victory against India. The consecutive defeats signaled the end of Perera’s stint as leader of the side. The all-rounder had replaced Upul Tharanga as the captain of the side.

Sri Lanka ODI Squad: Angelo Mathews (captain), Upul Tharanga, Asela Gunaratne, Niroshan Dickwella, Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Pradeep, Dushmantha Chameera, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Perera, Thisara Perera, Shehan Madushanka, Akila Dhananjaya, Lakshan Sandakan, Wanindu Hasaranga.
