South Africa have announced their 15-member squad for the first two games of the upcoming Test series against Australia. The hosts have included uncapped wicket-keeper batsman Heinrich Klaasen and all-rounder Wiann Mulder in the Test squad.
South Africa Test Captain Faf du Plessis has been declared fit for the first game after being out of action due to a finger injury. AB De Villiers also missed the initial part of the one-day series against India due to a finger injury. Quinton de Kock also suffered from wrist problem and was ruled out of the one-day series against India. All three players are expected to be fit in time for the first game of the series at Durban that will be played on 1st March.
Dale Steyn has not been included in the squad as premier pacer has not recovered from bruised heel suffered during the game played against India at Cape Town. The all-rounders in Andile Phehlukwayo and Chris Morris have been excluded from the Test squad while Duanne Olivier also misses out on a place due to Lungi Ngidi’s impressive numbers against India in the three-match series.
Heinrich Klaasen has been performing well at the domestic level and showed great maturity and composure to help South Africa win games at Johannesburg and Centurion. He has made an impressive start to his international career and looked comfortable against Indian spinners. Titans’ wicket-keeper scored heavily in the first-class season with 292 runs at an average of 48.66. He has been selected as reserve keeper if in case de Kock does not perform well in the coming series against Australia.
All-rounder Wiann Mulder also has enjoyed good form this season. He scored 370 runs and 15 wickets during the season.
CSA Chief Selector Linda Zondi said that Klaasen has been superb at the international level after making his debut in the series against India. The selection management believes that Klaasen can also deliver the goods in the five-day format. Zondi stated Wiann Mulder has done well as an all-rounder in the Sunfoil first-class competition and has rightfully earned his call-up to the national side. The first game of the four-match series will be played at Kingsmead Cricket Ground, Durban.
