AB De Villiers set to miss first three games of one-day series against India due to injury

South Africa’s premier batsman AB De Villiers is set to miss first three games of the upcoming one-day series against India after suffering from a finger injury. South Africa have not yet named a replacement for the star player as hosts will be hopeful he can last leg of the one-day series.

De Villiers suffered from a finger injury during the third and final Test of the series played at The Wanderers, Johannesburg. However, he did bat for South Africa in the second innings despite being out of the field for most of India’s second innings due to considerable bruising.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced in a press release that De Villiers sustained the injury during the third game against India and will take at least two weeks to regain full fitness. The medical staff is optimistic that De Villiers will regain full fitness for the fourth game of the one-day series to be played at Johannesburg on 10th February. South Africa selection committee has not yet named a replacement for De Villiers.

AB De Villiers injury is a big setback for South Africa as hosts wanted to continue their winning streak over India in the one-day series. The 33-year old has a superb record against India, scoring 1295 runs in 29 games with six centuries to his name. He also was the leading run-scorer for South Africa in the recently concluded three-match Test series against India. In 2017, AB De Villiers decided to quit captaincy in the one-day format in order to prolong his international career for South Africa. CSA appointed Faf du Plessis as new one-day captain of South Africa in September.

The situation looks good as AB De Villiers will have just need to concentrate on his batting rather than carrying the burden of captaincy around his shoulders. The first game of the six-match one-day series will be played at Kingsmead Cricket Stadium in Durban on 1st February.
