Aiden Markram signs for England county side Durham for upcoming 2018 season

This will be Makram’s first season in the English County Championship with Durham.

South Africa’s rising star Aiden Markram has signed for Durham for the upcoming season of English County Championship. The announced was made by the county side on 26th February.

Tom Latham also has been signed for the one-day leg of the season and has been named as a replacement for Markram who will leave the side due to international duties for South Africa.

Aiden Markram made his Test debut for South Africa in the home series against Bangladesh in September 2017. He will be available for the opening game of the County Championship against Kent and will play till the month of May. The 23-year old will play all the games for the side.

Durham have lost a lot of big players as Graham Onions and Keaton Jennings opted to play for Lancashire in the upcoming season. All-rounder Paul Coughlin also left the county side to join Nottinghamshire. Aiden Markram signing will definitely fill the void left by players like Keaton Jennings and Paul Coughlin.

Aiden Markram has been impressive in the short span of time at the international level. He also led South Africa in the one-day series against India. The series did out turn out to be a good one as South Africa lost the series by a comprehensive margin. The opener averages over 50 from six games played for South Africa in Test cricket. He holds a splendid record at first-class level with eight hundreds to his name from 42 matches.

Latham will join the side for the one-day competition as he made his mark with the bat for Durham last season. He will be available for Durham for their opening game against Yorkshire on 18th May.

Keaton Jennings was the captain of the side for the 50-over competition while Paul Coughlin was designated leader in the NatWest T20 Blast. Paul Collingwood led the side in the County Championship due to his wealth of experience at the first-class level.

Durham County Club Chairman, Sir Ian Botham said that signing Markam and Latham for the upcoming season will hold them in a good position. He also was delighted to have Tom Latham back for this season as he has been an exceptional performer for New Zealand for the last couple of years.
