Sunrisers Hyderabad have named England opener Alex Hales as a replacement for David Warner for this year’s competition. The batsman has signed for a price of Rs 1 crore from Available Player Pool List.
Hyderabad have suffered a setback as their captain David Warner has been banned from playing in Indian Premier League due to his alleged involvement in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. Kane Williamson has been named as new captain of the side. The franchise were looking for a player who can adequately fill the opening slot as David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan have done a fantastic job for the side as openers. Hales is an accomplished player in the T20 format and is the only England player to score a century in a 20-over game.
David Warner will obviously be a big loss for Sunrisers as he has been instrumental in helping the franchise lift their maiden crown in 2016 Indian Premier League. The left-hander has scored 2,579 runs in 59 games at a spectacular average of 52.63.
Alex Hales is a dangerous player in this conditions where their little or no assistance for the bowlers. He has scored over 1400 runs in 52 T20 games at an average of 31.65. He went unsold in the 2018 IPL Auction while his England teammates like Chris Woakes, Ben Stokes, and Jos Buttler bagged profitable deals during the event.
The right-handed batsman is certainly not a newcomer in the Indian Premier League having previously played for Mumbai Indians in 2015 IPL season. In that season, he was named as a replacement for New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson who was ruled out of competition due to injury.
Hales did play for Islamabad United in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League 2018. He did not get a lot of runs but will certainly be keen to make an impression in IPL.
