Rajasthan Royals has appointed Steve Smith as their captain for the upcoming season of Indian Premier League. The announcement came shortly after the appointment of Shane Warne as the mentor for the franchise.
Smith also captained Rising Pune Supergiants last season and led them to their finals of the competition. He also accumulated 472 runs in the 2017 season. However, Smith side’s did not win the final against Mumbai Indians last season. Rajasthan Royals did retain Steven Smith from their 2015 squad for almost Rs12 crore.
Australian Captain has not been in good form in the shorter formats of the game. He produced a scintillating performance with the bat in the recently concluded Ashes series that saw Australia regain the Urn. Smith spoke to media that he is delighted to be back with Rajasthan Royals for the coming season. He said that he enjoyed his time with the franchise and was keen to work alongside Shane Warne.
Warne showered a lot of appreciation and praise for Smith and his leadership qualities. The legendary leg-spinner said that he has seen Smith evolve into a world-class batsman and leader of Australia national cricket team. He said he currently is the best player in the world in Test cricket and was looking forward to working with Smith.
Steve Smith accumulated over 600 runs in the Ashes series against England. He was recently awarded Test Cricketer of the Year for splendid performances during this time. Smith will be keen to turn things around with the bat in the T20 format and help Rajasthan Royals go the distance in the coming season of Indian Premier League.
Rajasthan Royals will make their return to competition after spot-fixing scandal resulted in the franchise handed out a two-year ban. They will play their first game against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2018 Indian Premier League on 9th April at Hyderabad.
