Bangladesh Cricket Board all set to appoint Rangana Herath as new spin coach

Former left-arm spinner, Rangana Herath has been named as new spin coach for Bangladesh. He will replace former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori for this post. Bangladesh Cricket Board Operation Chairman, Akram Khan confirmed that Rangana Herath is the front runner to replace Vettori as spin bowling coach.

Bangladesh Cricket Board have yet to make a final decision. The position for spin bowling coach has remained vacant as former New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori was not able to fly to Bangladesh on a regular basis due to covid-19 pandemic.

During the pandemic, Bangladesh Cricket Board decided to appoint Sohel Islam as interim spin coach for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Despite being a popular coach among players in the dressing room, he wasn’t able to join the squad for the tour of Zimbabwe. Sohel Islam have decided to skip Zimbabwe due to paternity leave.

According to many sources, Pakistan spin wizard Saeed Ajmal and Indian spinner Sairaj Bahatule were in the list of candidates applying for the role of spin bowling coach. Akram Khan stated that Rangana Herath has been one of leading candidates to fill the role of spin bowling coach. He is front-runner to take up the role and assist Bangladesh spinners.

The selectors will be hoping that new spin coach can work with spinners for the upcoming series against Zimbabwe and Australia. BCB will be hoping that they can appoint Herath as new spin coach of the national side.

After Muttiah Muralitharan, left-arm spinner Rangana Herath has been one of premier spinners for Sri Lanka in Test cricket. He represented Sri Lanka in 93 Test matches, in which he has claimed 433 wickets at an average of 28.1. In a career spanning almost two decades, Rangana Herath has claimed 34 five-fors and 9 ten-fors for Sri Lanka in Test cricket.
