Kusal Perera named captain, Dhananjaya de Silva returns for Bangladesh ODI series

Sri Lankan have announced their 18-member squad for the upcoming one-day series against Bangladesh. After suffering from a clean sweep in the one-day series against West Indies, the selectors have decided to make wholesale changes for the three-match series against Bangladesh.

Swashbuckling opener Kusal Perera has been appointed as the new captain of Sri Lanka in limited-overs cricket. Despite being dropped for the previous tour of the Caribbean, Kusal Mendis makes a comeback to the side. He has been named vice-captain and will act as deputy to Kusal Perera for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh.

With Dimuth Karunaratne sacked from captaincy, Kusal Perera will be hoping to turn things around for Sri Lanka in the 50-over format. Experienced players like Angelo Matthews, Lahiru Thiramanne and Dinesh Chandimal have not been considered for the tour of Bangladesh.

Before the start of 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, Dimuth Karunaratne was named captain of the side. Left hander had a tough start to his captaincy as Sri Lanka fail to make an impression in the World Cup played in England and Wales. During his reign as captain, Karunaratne managed to register series wins over Bangladesh and West Indies. This season has been far from ideal as they suffered whitewashes at the hands of Pakistan and West Indies in the 50-over format.

Uncapped players like Chamika Karunaratne and Shiran Fernando have been included in Sri Lanka squad for the ODI series. Binura Fernando, who has made few appearances for Sri Lanka in the T20 format, makes a comeback to the one-day side.

The all-rounder duo of Isuru Udana and Dhananjaya de Silva make their return to the squad and will provide value with bat and ball. The duo was overlooked for the previous series against West Indies.

The Islanders will fly for Bangladesh on 16th May. All three matches of the one-day series will be played at Dhaka. The one-day series is slated to begin from 23rd May.

Sri Lanka Squad for the ODI series against Bangladesh: Kusal Perera (captain), Kusal Mendis (vice-captain), Danushka Gunathilaka, Dhananjaya De Silva, Niroshan Dickwella, Isuru Udana, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Pathum Nissanka, Ashen Bandara, Ramesh Mendis, Akila Dhananjaya, Dushmantha Chameera, Asitha Fernando, Binura Fernando, Shiran Fernando, Chamika Karunaratne, Lakshan Sandakan.
