Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga went unsold during the 2018 IPL auction held on 27th and 28th January. The speedster has been named bowling mentor by Mumbai Indians for their coming season.
Malinga has been played all the Indian Premier League editions with Mumbai Indians and was the leader for the side in the bowling department. He was instrumental in the franchise winning the title on more than two occasions. He garnered a lot of support from cricketing fans at the Wankhede Cricket Stadium for Mumbai Indian home fixtures.
Malinga spoke on his appointment and said that he was excited to continue his association with Mumbai Indians. He stated that Mumbai has been his second home away from Sri Lanka for the last ten years. He said he thoroughly enjoyed his playing days in Indian Premier League and will be focused to start a new chapter in his cricketing career with Mumbai Indians.
He was fondly remembered as “Slinga Malinga” due to slinging action and is the bowler who has taken most wickets in the Indian Premier League. Malinga has picked up 154 wickets in 110 games followed by Delhi Daredevils leg-spinner Amit Mishra. He also won the Purple Cap in 2011 for most wickets in the competition. He was instrumental in Mumbai Indians lifting the crown on three occasions.
The 34-year old has been struggling with injuries and his bowling prowess has seen a terminal decline. He has made limited appearances for the national side and not done well during this time. Malinga would be a handful in terms of imparting necessary information to young bowlers who will play for Mumbai Indians in the coming season. India’s leading pacer Jaspreet Bumrah also acknowledged Malinga support in making him a better bowler while playing in Indian Premier League.
Malinga will work with the likes of Mahela Jayawardene, Shane Bond and Robin Singh for the coming season.
