Mumbai Indians have suffered a setback of sorts as pacer Lasith Malinga will miss the upcoming edition of Indian Premier League. Australian quick James Pattinson has been replacement for Malinga for 2020 Indian Premier League. The veteran decided to spend time with himself and has opted not to participate in the Indian Premier League this year.
The announcement was made by Mumbai Indians management on 2nd September. The franchise said James Pattinson is the ideal player to replace Lasith Malinga for the coming season. Mumbai Indian owner Akash Ambani said that Malinga has played an instrumental role in helping Mumbai Indians win four IPL Trophies. He stated that the side will certainly miss his experience in the death overs of the innings.
Last year, Lasith Malinga bowled well and finished the competition with 16 wickets to his name. He also picked two four-wicket hauls for Mumbai Indians in the tournament played last season. He is currently the all-time leading wicket-taker in the history of Indian Premier League since making his debut in the inaugural season in 2009. Last year, Malinga successfully defended nine runs to see Mumbai edge out Chennai by one run and lift record fourth IPL title.
His replacement, James Pattinson, is a consistent performer in the T20 format. He has played for Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League and will be looking to make an impression for Mumbai Indian this season.
Lasith Malinga has played in the Indian Premier League for almost a decade now and has claimed 170 wickets in 122 matches at an average of 19.80 and splendid economy rate of 7.14. On the other hand, James Pattinson have never played in the Indian Premier League and will be looking to adjust to the conditions prevalent in the United Arab Emirates.
The 13th edition of the tournament will begin on September 19 when Mumbai Indians take on Chennai Super Kings at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
