Off-spinner Mahesh Theekshana has been named in Sri Lanka’s T20 squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup to be played in the UAE and Oman, starting from 17th October.
Binura Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Pulina Tharanga and Akila Dhananjaya have been named as reserve players for the showpiece event. Minod Bhanuka, Pathum Nissanka and Ramesh Mendis have failed to find a place in the final squad for the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup.
Experienced players like Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka are notable absentees as they are serving ban for breaching covid-19 protocols. Seven players have been retained that featured in the recently concluded ODI series against South Africa.
Former Captain and all-rounder Angelo Matthews was unavailable for selection and is not listed as contracted players for Sri Lanka.
Mahesh Theekshana made quite an impact on his debut for Sri Lanka in the one-day series against South Africa. He can also a lot of variations and bagged a four-wicket haul. Theekshana also managed to take single wicket in the only T20I match played against Sri Lanka.
Mahesh Theekshana has made 23 appearances in the T20 format and claimed 22 scalps at an excellent average of 20.86. His career best bowling performances came against Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club and claimed 2 for 9 in the domestic T20I competition played this year.
Kamindu Mendis and Bhanuka Rajapaksa have been named in the Sri Lanka’s squad for the upcoming 2021 ICC T20 World Cup. His best batting performance of 77 runs of 48 balls came against Sri Lanka at Gaddafi Cricket Stadium in Lahore.
Kamindu Mendis has made limited appearances for Sri Lanka in the T20 format. Mendis can bowl both slow left-arm orthodox and off-spin. Praveen Jayawickrama has yet to make his debut for Sri Lanka in the T20 format. Left-arm orthodox spinner has made his appearance in the Test format and claimed 11 wickets in the only game played against Bangladesh. Besides, Praveen Jayawickrama has also played five one-day internationals.
The Islanders will kick-start their T20 World Cup campaign against Namibia on 18th October in Abu Dhabi.
