Pakistan Cricket Board announce central contracts for women’s national cricket team

Middle-order batsmen Omaima Sohail and left-arm spinner Anam Amin have managed to earn PCB central contracts for the upcoming 2020-21 season. The central contract lists consists of nine players, who are placed into three categories that will materialize from 1st July. The initiative taken to create central contracts for women’s national team is another stepping stone to raise the profile of women’s sport in the country.

After a comprehensive review by Pakistan Cricket Board, Bismah Maroof has managed to retain his place as the captain of the side for all the three formats. She will lead the side for big events such as ICC Women’s ODI World Cup Qualifier and ACC Women’s Asia Cup over the next twelve months.

However, Pakistan Cricket Board has decided not to renew the contract of head coach and will be filled in the upcoming months. Captain Bismah Maroof and vice-captain Javeria Khan have been placed in Category A and earned their promotion due to consistent performances in the last 12 months. All-rounder Aliya Riaz, pacer Diana Baig and wicket-keeper Sidra Nawaz have been placed in the Category B.  Premier all-rounder Nida Dar has been demoted to Category C due to her lack of performances in the past 12 months.

Another important thing to note that nine players awarded central contracts will receive an increment of 33 per cent in the monthly retainers of the Category A players, while players in Category B and C will receive a raise of 30 and 25 per cent respectively.

Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to raise the match fee for all the players. The prize money has been increased by 100 per recent. Daily allowances including travel expenses have seen a 50 percent.

Rookies Syed Arooba Shah and Ayesha Nadeem, who made their debut for Pakistan in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup played earlier this year. Among the nine players, the board has introduced the new emerging player contracts.

Women’s central contract list for 2020-21 season:

  • Category A – Bismah Maroof, Javeria Khan
  • Category B – Diana Baig, Sidra Nawaz, Aliya Riaz
  • Category C – Anam Amin, Nida Dar, Omaima Sohail and Nahida Khan.

Players included in the Emerging contract list are Ayesha Nadeem, Kainat Hafeez, Muneeba Ali Siddique, Najiha Alvi, Fatima Sana, Rameen Shamim, Sadia Iqbal, Syed Arooba Shah and Saba Nazir.

Pakistan Women’s cricket chief selector, Urooj Mumtaz said, “The selection committee has gone through major discussions before announcing central contracts for the women’s national cricket team.”

She said that the players’ ability and fitness standards and to contribute in both white-ball formats were key measures that formed the criteria for the selection. Mumtaz said that Diana Baig has shown massive improvement in the past 12 months and has led the bowling charts for Pakistan in ODI and T20I format.

Omaima Sohail has done well for the side in the ODI and T20 format. She has contributed well with decent scores for the side in the past 12 months. Besides Omaima, Anam Amin has done as slow left-arm spinner.

Urooj Mumtaz said that selection committee has rewarded players who done consistently well over the 12-month period. For those who missed out on central contracts, they will need to improve their game and deliver the goods in the coming season. Pakistan Cricket Board is also going to create a performance-based review in the coming six months in a bid to improve team’s overall results and eliminate any Form of complacency.
