Sydney Thunder have named Shane Bond as their new Head Coach for the forthcoming season of Big Bash League.Former New Zealand fast bowl was previously working as an assistant to Daniel Vettori who is Head Coach of Brisbane Heat. He has signed a three-year contract with Sydney Thunders.
Paddy Upton’s contract was not renewed by Sydney Thunders. Former coach was instrumental in helping them lift the Big Bash League in 2016. The franchise could not replicate their good form in the next two seasons which resulted in this change. Thunders finished in 8th in the league in 2017 and 6th in the recently concluded BBL.
Shane Bond spoke to the media and said that opportunity will be a chance to work with new players is always exciting. He stated that he wanted to be a part of winning side that could go on to lift trophies. There is blend of youth and experience in the squad so Bond’s main agenda will make sure they can perform well as a unit.
Shane Bond has worked in different leagues around the world and has been associated with Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. He holds a credible experience at the international level with sides like England and New Zealand. It will certainly be a new experience for Bond since he has never been a head coach at the international level. He has done a commendable job as bowling coach and it will be interesting to see how he goes in his new role for Sydney Thunders.
General Manager for Sydney Thunder, Lee Germon stated that Shane Bond is the right man for the job and has all the qualities to become a successful coach at the top level. Germon said that Bond has been a world-class performer for New Zealand and done a fantastic job for international teams like England and New Zealand.
Bond’s vast experience in the T20 format will certainly hold him in a good position to turn things around for Sydney Thunders in the next edition of BBL.
