BCCI has named their 16-member squad for the forthcoming three-match T20 series against New Zealand that starts from 1st November. Uncapped Shreyas Iyer and Mohammad Siraj have earned their maiden call-ups to the national side for the T20 format.
Iyer has been splendid opener playing for Mumbai and has piled up over 1200 runs in the domestic T20 League. He also played exceedingly well for India-A side against New Zealand-A at Vizag. Mumbai born opener was highest run getter for Delhi Daredevils in the 2017 Indian Premier League and also produced a brilliant 96 runs off just 57 balls against Gujarat Lions in the league. He scored 338 runs for Delhi in the 2017 Indian Premier League.
Ashish Nehra also finds a place in the squad and is rumored to play his final international game for India at Delhi. The first game of the T20 series will take place at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi so it is certain that Nehra might game ahead of either Jaspreet Bumrah or Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the lineup. Fast bowler Mohammad Siraj who hails from Hyderabad has earned a well-deserved selection to the T20 squad. The promising young pace bowler was a revelation with the ball for Sunrisers in 2017 Indian Premier League as he picked up 10 wickets at an average of 21.20. Siraj was known for being death-overs specialist as he was able to execute yorkers and full-length deliveries for the franchise in the competition.
Former Indian captain and wicket-keeper MS Dhoni also found backing from the selection committee led by Prasad. Dhoni who has excellent in the 50-over format for the past one year has struggled to get going in the T20 format. He has shown good form this year accumulating 673 runs at an average of 67.3 till now. The selection committee also addressed the issue of whether Ashish Nehra will play for India in the first T20 game at Delhi. He said that the management and selection committee has not decided anything yet as every decision will be taken on the day of the game. Prasad said that committee has given no assurances to Nehra that he will play in the game. Things might go against Nehra as India have not yet registered a win over New Zealand in the T20 format and lost five out of six played between the two sides.
. Dinesh Karthik also will be a part of the squad as he did well in the recently concluded one-day series against New Zealand.
The selectors have continued with spin troika that has done well for India in recent times as Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal are in the squad for the series. The spin duo of Ravendra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin could not find a place in the squad.
