Suranga Lakmal returns, Sri Lanka announce T20I, ODI squads for West Indies series

Veteran pacer Suranga Lakmal has been named in the Sri Lanka’s T20I and ODI squads for the tour of West Indies. He was named as a replacement for rookie pacer Lahiru Kumara, who is suffering from coronavirus.

Initially picked in the 20-man squad picked for the tour of the Caribbean by Sri Lanka Cricket Board, Kumara covid-19 Test came out positive, which meant that he was effectively ruled out of the tour. Veteran Suranga Lakmal was named as a last-minute replacement for Kumara for the tour of West Indies.

On the other hand, Lakmal makes his return to white-ball cricket after playing his last one-day game for Sri Lanka in South Africa in 2019. The selection committee has opted for different captains for T20Is and ODI series. All-rounder Dasun Shanaka will lead the side for the T20I series, while Dimuth Karunaratne will take over captaincy duties in the 50-over format.

Former Skipper and veteran batsman, Dinesh Chandimal, makes his comeback to the ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming tour of the Caribbean. It has been almost a year since Sri Lanka last played their bilateral one-day series against West Indies.

Akila Dhananjaya has been cleared to bowl again in international cricket after changing his action. The off-spinner served a 12-month ban after his action was declared illegal by the International Cricket Council.

Bowling all-rounder Ramesh Mendis has earned his maiden call-up for the upcoming white-ball tour of the West Indies. Uncapped players like Pathum Nissanka and Ashen Bandra have been called up for the upcoming tour of the Caribbean. Pacer Dilshan Madushanka, who played for Sri Lanka in the last U-19 Cricket World Cup, has earned his maiden call-up to the national side for West Indies tour.

The visitors will kick-start their tour of West Indies with three-match T20I series, starting from 3rd March in Antigua. The one-day series will be played on 10th, 12th and 14th March in Antigua as well. The conclusion of one-day series will see Sri Lanka take on West Indies in a two-match Test series that will be played in Antigua
